A brand platform and a plan built to be run, for an ecosystem in its first months

What does a structure in its first months need from marketing? Not a slogan. A clear line on what it is, what it is not, and what it publishes next Monday. I joined a pan-African ecosystem of strategic communication and events as growth strategist, a few weeks before its public launch.
The positioning was frozen two days before launch. The guidelines followed: five values, a tone of voice, a visual identity. In August I delivered a 29-slide communication plan, written in the ecosystem's own voice, and a bank of fifteen LinkedIn posts ready to go.
The useful part was not the positioning line. It was the list of five things the brand refuses to be.
An ecosystem, not an agency: experts and vetted providers in several African countries, organised in seven circles, with a core team accountable for delivery. Its claim is governance, not creativity. It sells to institutions and event organisers.
No track record under its own name. Many contributors, one voice to agree on. Every post in English and in French. And a positioning to settle before the public launch, not after.
1 · Write what the brand is not.
Five exclusions, set before any tagline: not a small local executor, not an events agency, not a European agency working "on" Africa, not a vague intermediary, not an informal freelance network with no one accountable. A list of banned phrases came right after.
2 · Freeze the positioning before launch.
Structured collective intelligence, local-first at a world-class standard. Agreed two days before the public launch.
3 · Guidelines before content.
Five values, a tone of voice, a visual identity.
4 · A plan written to be run.
29 slides, in the ecosystem's first person plural: three authority pillars, two channels, a standard week, rules, and how it is measured. No recommendations left to interpret.
5 · Fifteen posts ahead.
Five per pillar, in the real publishing format, English then French. Two posts already live were folded into the bank instead of being rewritten.
Brand platform and communication plan, April to August 2026.
- Positioning agreed two days before the public launch
- Five exclusions and a list of banned phrases, written into the brand platform
- A 29-slide execution plan: three pillars, two channels, one standard week, rules and measurement
- Fifteen bilingual posts written ahead, five per pillar
Brand work for a young structure can be scoped to what its team will run: five exclusions, one positioning line, one plan, fifteen posts. All of it was in the team's hands by the end of August.
